Benefits of Mindfulness in Pregnancy

Research has shown that pregnant women and new mothers who regularly practice mindfulness meditation benefit from:

  • Reducing risk of pre- and post-natal depression
  • Reduced fear of labour and less medical pain relief/intervention during labour
  • Reduced risk of preterm birth
  • Better sleep and less insomnia
  • Improved immune function
  • Lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol which can impact on  your baby's development during pregnancy and their ability to settle and adapt to new environments during infancy
  • Improved milk production when breastfeeding
  • Feeling better able to cope with stress, uncertainty, and the rollacoaster of other emotions that accompany pregnancy and motherhood
  • A general increase in well being and happiness, which supports parenting as well as attachment and bonding with your children

Modelling a more mindful way of living as a parent also supports your children to learn helpful ways of coping with life's challenges and their own emotions. Mindfulness is now being taught in many schools and even in some nurseries because of its recognised benefits for child development, concentration and happiness.
